Vocabulary forms an essential part of every competitive exam. Here is a compilation of first 1000 words that must be prepared by SSC, MBA entrance, and government exam aspirants. Spread over 25 lists of 40 words, these lists offer you a chance to learn the most common English words.
Each word in each list is accompanied with its meaning and followed by a usage example. The words are categorized on three levels: Level 1 (beginner), Level 2 (intermediate) and Level 3 (advanced). Go through the word lists and enhance your vocabulary skills.

Level-1: Let’s get warmed up
Beloved: Beloved describes someone or something that is loved dearly
The way a mother feels about her baby is an example of beloved.
Devout: Sincere
An unending stream of the devout brings offerings of country-made liquor to this revered shrine of Baba Bhode Shah, who is believed to grant all wishes.
Exploit: To use immorally
The rich should not exploit the poor economically in the name of capitalism.
Fissure: Deep crack
Apparently, the party seems to be united in its approach, but of late deep fissures have appeared among the leaders over tackling the issue of reservations in jobs.
Flimsy: Thin and weak
Flimsy objects don’t last long.
Homogeneous: Uniform, even
Since India is a country with such diverse agricultural patterns, it is unwise to have a homogeneous policy for all regions.
Indicative: Showing
The large fiscal deficit this time is indicative of the fact that the government has spent more than it has earned during the last financial year.
Intricate: Very complex
The seemingly intricate carvings on the Taj are, in reality, extracts taken from the Quran and this becomes clear only if you take a close look at them.
Oddity: An eccentricity
In early time working mothers were regarded a bit of an oddity.

Level-2: Let’s take it up a notch
Apprise: Inform

Cringe: Shrink from fear

Expertise: Skill
Jatu's superb expertise in playing different musical instruments owed itself to the immense practice he had with them.
Frenzied: Wild
The frenzied mob, already enraged with the police atrocities, set ablaze many government buildings and vehicles.
Frivolous: Non-serious, casual
The frivolity with which Mr. Casual treated the whole affair earned him the title of being non-serious even in serious matters.
Garnish: To trim
The dish as such was just passable, but the garnishing done by her with green spices had made it a bit more palatable.
Homicide: The killing of one human being by another
The police arrived at the scene of the homicide.
Homologous: Alike in structure
The post of Indian President is, in many ways, quite homologous to the British Queen’s, for both of them are nominal posts with little “real” power.
Magnanimous: Generous
Magnanimous soul as he was, he did not think twice before giving out money and relief materials for the flood-ravaged populace.
Nausea: Severe upset stomach
She went to the doctor with a complaint of severe headache and nausea, although she had not actually vomited.
Safeguard: To protect
The company was blamed for failing to safeguard workers interests.
Tentative: Hesitant
Though nothing is finalized as yet, the tentative date for the test is in the first week of December.
Level-3: Time to be a master
Acquiesce: To agree without enthusiasm
The plaintiff acquiesced to the court’s verdict, for he had no option but to accept it.
Ardour: Passion
The ardour with which you take part in sports, if applied to studies, can work wonders for your career.
Circuitous: Indirect
Ulta-Pulta is very fond of giving circuitous arguments instead of coming to the matter straightway.
Clique: A small group
The three of them Ram, Hari and Rajeev formed a clique to harass the chairman.
Devious: Deceiving
It may sound like a devious ploy, but this is the only way to achieve our targets.
Diffident: Lacking self confidence , timid, shy
The diffidence of a newly-wed girl entering her in-laws’ house for the first time is quite understandable, for she is extremely cautious of her newfound status among absolute strangers.
Emancipate: To release from bondage.
People visit holy places to emancipate from their sins.
Exorbitant: Going beyond usual and proper limits
You need to earn exorbitant money to maintain such a lifestyle.
Flagrant: Outrageous
It is surprising how this flagrant violation of rules on house allotment has been going on for the past ten years, without anybody raising any objection to it.
Fraught: Filled
The solution proposed by Ritu to Gitu's problem was fraught with so many difficulties later that Gitu could not accept it despite finding it very appealing.
Frigid: Cold
The warmth of the hostess was matched only by the frigid attitude of her husband.
Gambit: A maneuver

Garner: Gather

Immutable: Not capable of change
Whatever interpretation we make of our religious scriptures is not immutable; with the changing times, the interpretation does and should change.
Knavery: Dishonesty
Deceit, lies and knavery are the characteristics of present-day politics.
Perjury: Lying under oath
I wonder how a person can commit perjury in the court after swearing to speak the truth.
Verbose: Wordy
He is too verbose at times and says more than is required.
