In this series of articles, we have compiled 1000 words that frequently feature in competitive exams.Spread over 25 lists of 40 words, these lists offer you a chance to learn the most essential English words.
Each word in the list is accompanied with its meaning and followed by a usage example. The words are categorized on three levels: 1, 2 and 3, according to the degree of difficulty. Go through the word lists and strengthen your vocabulary database.

Hoax: Something intended to deceive |
There wasn’t a bomb in the school at all –it was just a hoax. |
Irrelevant: Having no bearing on or connection with the subject at issue |
She was disturbed by his irrelevant comments. |
Modify: Make less severe or harsh or extreme |
Please modify this letter to make it more polite. |
Murky: Dark or gloomy |

Impeccable: Without fault or error |

Inherent: In the nature of something though not readily apparent |

Latent: Potentially existing but not presently |
She had a latent talent for music. |
Manifold: Many and varied; having many features or forms |
He had to overcome manifold difficulties before qualifying for the job. |
Perpetrate: Perform an act, be responsible for something |
He perpetrated a nasty joke on his sister. |
Romp: Play boisterously |
The toddlers romped in the playroom. |
Spontaneous: Happening or arising without apparent external cause |
His offer to help the blind man was very spontaneous. |
Level 3: Time to be a master
Assiduous: Marked by care and persistent effort |
Her assiduous attempts to learn French failed. |
Buff: An ardent follower and admirer |

Concoct: Devise or invent |
The prisoner concocted a false story to get a lighter sentence. |
Conjugal: Of or relating to marriage or to the relationship between a wife and husband |

Consummate: Make perfect; bring to perfection |

Itinerant: Travelling from place to place to work |

Labyrinth: A maze |

Myriad: Too numerous to be counted |

Peregrination : Travelling or wandering around |

Subterfuge: A deceptive stratagem or device, ruse |

Tortuous: Highly complex or intricate and occasionally devious |
